The winners of the Apps4Finland contest were awarded on 22 November in front of a full house in the Vanha ylioppilastalo. The contest, now staged for the third time, inspired a record number of citizens to develop new ways to utilise the open databanks of the public administration. Forum Virium Helsinki and World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 are bringing a unique cooking show in Amsterdam. At PICNIC 2011, we will build up Open Data Kitchen -studio, hosted by the best open data chefs from Finland. Open data from Amsterdam and Helsinki will serve as our ingredients, as we cook data visualisations showing the cities in a new light. Walk and Feel Helsinki wants to attract cruise tourists arriving in the marine district of Hernesaari, an area still under construction. A guided route with digital features has been built from the port to the center of Helsinki. The idea is to lure cruise passengers out of their ships to get acquainted with Helsinki. Lue lisää »

The Apps4Finland competition of 2011 has started. The competition encourages citizens to come up with new ideas on how to utilize the open data reserves of public administration. This year participants will compete in four different series for awards totaling 21,000 euros. The competition will run until October 23rd, 2011. The HSL travel card will function as the race pass for the European Sailing Championships in Helsinki. Practical arrangements will be a breeze, as services and registrations are handled with a single card. The Helsinki region travel card is normally used in public transport, but at the Open Europeans the card also functions as a food voucher, an ID card, and an important part of the access control system. The Helsinki Region Infoshare project initiated by the cities of the Helsinki metropolitan area opens up the cities’ databases for everybody. The publicly available data can be found at the new web service www.hri.fi. The data can be utilized free of charge.The Helsinki Region Infoshare (www.hri.fi) web service makes public data from the Helsinki Region available for anyone to use.
