Ordinary people are able to contribute significantly when it comes to the development of travel and public transport. Destia, an enterprise offering services in the fields of infrastructure and construction, joined forces with Helsinki Living Lab to find out what kind of traffic and transportation information would be valuable displayed on the public screens. They also wanted to survey different modes of transport as well as why people travel. In addition, Destia simply wanted to gather more data on public display screen users to aid their product and service development.
The research consisted of two phases. The first phase was carried out in the form of sidewalk surveys in which passers-by were interviewed in Helsinki city centre. In the locality of Arabianranta, people were invited to compare and comment on prototypes produced by Destia. During the second phase, the subject matter was brought under closer examination in conversations and personal interviews among a smaller user group.
As a result, Destia was able to form a versatile picture of various users and their modes of transport as well as reasons why they were travelling. Also, the users were able to provide plenty of information on what sort of contents they would be interested in seeing on public display screens.
