Managed outcomes

The project assumes that healthcare outcomes and costs are affected by the efficiency of service production, the regional structure of healthcare delivery, and the degree to which people are empowered to participate in the co-production of their care.

The Managed Outcomes project aims to provide tools for decision makers for designing healthcare systems based on the demand. The relationship between outcomes and costs is insuffi ciently understood and needs to be studied to meet the objectives of the new European health strategy. More optimized health systems should be planned on the grounds of citizens’ expectations for both effective outcomes and for access to and quality of healthcare delivery. 

 In this project, case studies are analysed and compared in different countries and the results are used for developing scenarios and models of future healthcare systems.

A wide range of European partners

The three-year Managed Outcomes (Operations Management and Demand-Based Approaches to Healthcare Outcomes and Cost-Benefits Research) project, which starts in January 2010, is carried out under the EU Seventh Framework programme theme HEALTH. Forum Virium Helsinki is responsible for management of the project, and participates in the definition and recruitment of the Finnish case studies.

The cooperation partners in this project are Aalto University, Erasmus University Rotterdam from the Netherlands, Otto-Friedrich-Universität from Germany, Universidad Politecnica de Valencia from Spain, Fédération Européenne des Hôpi- taux et des Soins de Santé from Belgium, Miller Steven Riel from France, Ethniki Scholi Dimosias Ygeias from Greece, Tom Bowen Associates from the UK, and Friedrich-Alexander Universität from Germany.
